What is a Drum Pump?
Like any pump, a drum pump is used to transport fluids from one location to another. However, unlike many other pumps, a drum pump is portable and is specifically designed to facilitate the transportation of fluids between barrels, drums, or other storage tanks. Also known as barrel pumps, drum pumps come in many different configurations which depend upon their application.
At Buy Pumps Direct, we offer a wide variety of leading drum pumps from the world's most reputable manufacturers, catering to every possible on site scenario.
How Does a Drum Pump Work?
It is common for manufacturing, farming, pharmaceutical, medical, food, and other industries to transport and store their liquids in large barrels. Many of these barrels can contain upwards of 200 litres of liquid. Because these containers are so large, it is difficult, if not impossible, for a person to tip them over in order to empty out any liquids safely. This is especially worrying when such liquids are of a hazardous or corrosive nature. This is where the drum pump comes in.
Drum pumps can be separated into four sections. The motor. The immersion tube. The pump section. And the discharge port. The immersion tube has to be able to reach the bottom of the container, as it is immersed in the liquid. At the bottom of the immersion tube you'll find the pump section. This will be of an impeller, screw, or diaphragm design depending on the specific pump. The motor usually sits at the top of the immersion tube out of the liquid, driving the pump to pull up the liquid into the immersion tube. Near the top of the immersion tube, just below the motor, is the discharge port. This leads out to another container or piping. As the motor turns, in the case of electric powered drum pumps, the liquid is sucked up and discharged through the discharge port, effectively emptying the container.
Buy Pumps Direct, includes a wide variety of these drum pumps, including hand operated versions which are also available and require no external power source. Another alternative is our air operated drum pump range.
What is a Drum Pump Used For?
Drum pumps eliminate the risks of handling liquids and their containers. They negate the possibility of injuries such as chemical burns or the breathing of toxic fumes when used with the correct apparatus. They are lightweight, portable, and are therefore a great option when required to empty several containers one after the other.
